Does Chewing Gum Help Sculpt Your Jawline?

Posted by Nicholas Sessa on

We have all been there.  Looking in the mirror wishing we had the chiseled jawline of a NYC fashion week model when in reality we look like an excited pufferfish.  There are plenty of costly and sometimes scary surgical options.  But does chewing gum help jawline shape and sharpness?  Can it be that simple?

.

Chewing Gum to Sculpt Your Jawline

The short answer is yesWhile many factors are at play when it comes to having a chiseled jawline, exercising the muscles in the jaw can help bring out a sharp chiseled jawline.  Couple this with reducing overall body fat, and you have a perfect recipe for that attractive look for your next Instagram photo without the need to photoshop that double chin.  Chewing gum to sculpt your jawline WILL help to exercise the muscles in the jaw and spark growth, leaving that weak, narrow jawline in the past!

Let's put on our lab coats and get scientific for one moment.  What muscles are exactly getting exercised when chewing jawline gum?  The main muscles at play here are the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid.  These all help to elevate, retract and bite.  While daily eating habits assist in exercising these jawline muscles, we never really go above and beyond to fully exhaust them to the point where growth is stimulated.  That's where ProjectJawline comes into play.  After your first day of exercise, your jaw will be pushed to exhaustion after following our workout program.  The following day will be a day of rest to allow the muscle to rest and grow.  Every other day will be a tougher and more grueling day of training.  Although chewing gum for your jawline will surely help over time, chewing jawline gum will yield quicker and more impressive results to build a strong jawline.

With that being said, not all gum is created equal.

Sure many people may stick 5 pieces of chewing gum at once in their mouth to increase resistance and exercise the muscles in the jaw.  While this is surely better than nothing, it poses 2 simple problems.  The first is the amount of sugar contained in the gum.  Sugar turns directly into fat, and we are trying to reduce body fat to help bring out a chiseled jawline- not increase it.  The second and most important issue is the amount of resistance.  Adding additional pieces of chewing gum to chisel your jawline may help for the first minute or so, but the consistency quickly fades and the gum becomes just as easy to chew as before!  Think about it.  You are not actually chewing the whole glob of gum in your mouth, it is pushed to the side as you bite down and you are only chewing on a small portion of that gum ball!  The Greeks have a better way, which is why the term "jawline sculpted by the Greek Gods" was coined.  The king of resistance and jawline exercise is mastic gum.   Let's take a look at this and some other jawline sculpting gums.

Mastic Gum Explained
.
Mastic gum for your jawline is by far the fan favorite of any jawline sculpting technique.  That's great and all, but what is it?

Cultivation
.
Let's take a trip together to the beautiful island of Chios, Greece.  There you will find the mastic tree.  Mastic gum is harvested from the resin (aka tears) of the tree in a slow and tedious process.  They say the purest mastic in the world is grown in Chios Island (they have European Union protection on it), and that is exactly where our supply of jawline gum is from here at Project Jawline.
.
Mastic gum production is a year long process.  Every 4-5 days, farmers will cut small slits into the bark of the trees so the resin can seep out.  While dangling from the bark and reflecting in the sun, they look like small crystals tears.  Mastic gum is now commonly referred to in Greece as the, "tears of Chios".  After the droplets are collected, they are dried out and ready for use as jawline gum!  The crystals provide up to 10x more resistance while chewing when compared to normal gum.  In addition, mastic has been said to aid in digestion and oral health.  When chewing, feel free to swallow your saliva and any pine/cedar like flavor that comes from the jawline gum.  It can be good for you in more ways than one!

History
.
So who doesn't like a few quick fun facts?
-Let's start with this one: Wars were fought and people were executed over mastic gum.
-Mastic gum has been harvested and chewed dating back 2500 years.
-Back during Ottoman rule in Greece, mastic gum was worth as much as gold.  The sultan would execute anyone who would dare to steal any mastic.  Then there was the Chios Massacre of 1822
-The people of Turkey named Chios Island "Sakiz Adasi," meaning literally Island of Gum.
-Ancient Greek villages that harvested Mastic (there are about 24 left today) would commonly be setup in a fortress-like capacity.  They were out of site, surrounded by high walls with no street level doors.  The only way to enter was with a ladder.
.
They Don't Say "Jawline Sculpted Like a Greek God" for no reason!
The people of Greece have been chewing jawline gum for thousands of years to build a strong, sharp jawline.
.
Falim Gum
falim gum
Falim gum, typically sold and widely utilized in Turkey, has similar properties to mastic gum with a few minor but important differences.  First, it is typically cheaper.  Next, it is typically not all natural and contains some additives that may or may not be healthy over the long term.  The taste is slightly rubbery, and it is roughly half as thick and resistant as mastic gum.  Some people may consider starting with regular gum, upgrading to falim gum and then ultimately graduating to mastic in order to slowly build the muscles in the jaw over time.
.
Silicone

While this isn't necessarily "gum" to exercise your jawline, there are a few companies who have created some jawline chew toys made of silicone designed to exercise your jaw that may be worth taking a look at.
There are a few major differences here to consider.
.
The silicone is chewed by the front teeth while jawline gum is typically chewed in the back.  This may yield different results and hit the muscles from a different angle.  While there have been both positive and negative reviews, one thing we DO know is that the front teeth are designed for tearing apart food, not chewing it consistently.  This may be why many people have claimed to chew through their product relatively quickly, needing a replacement.  These products may be worth a shot, but be careful and go slow as to not damage the front teeth.
.
Another difference is the discrete nature of jawline gum.  The silicone is very visible in the front of the mouth while exercising, so many people choose to exercise in the privacy of their own home whereas the gum can be chewed anywhere without anyone noticing.
.
While there are pro's and con's for the three above mentioned versions of jawline gum, preference is everything!  See what works for you, stay consistent and get a sculpted jawline in no time!

Bringing it all together
.
Does chewing gum help jawline sharpness and shape?  Just like any other muscle, training the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid while sticking to a strict jawline workout program will provide muscle growth, tightening of the skin around the muscle, and a more chiseled jawline!
.
A weak jawline isn't necessarily harmful by any means unless it affects the ability to eat and drink.  Underdeveloped muscles and an unaligned bite can surely affect a person's quality of life, as well as their self esteem.
.
3 types of jawline gum
1) Mastic Gum
2) Falim Gum
3) Silicone Chew
